What's a hushtag?

A hashtag that stands in for something private. Hushtag swaps your name for #PERSON_1, your SSN for #ID_NUMBER_1, your address for #ADDRESS_1, and so on. The AI works with the hashtags, then Hushtag swaps the real details back into its answer.

Is there a free version?

Yes. The extension is unlimited for your first 7 days, then you get 3 free hushes a week, and restoring answers is always free. You can also hush any text on this website for free, anytime. Personal ($29 a year) makes the extension unlimited and adds whole files, locked keys and the Android app. Pro ($79 a year) covers up to 3 people.

Does my document ever leave my device?

No. Hushtag reads and masks text on your computer or phone. Only the masked copy reaches your AI tool. See where your data goes.

Does it catch everything?

No tool does. ID, account and card numbers are caught very reliably. Names are harder, so Hushtag also looks for names that aren't ordinary words and lets you add your own list of names to always hush. Look over what it masked before you send.

Which AI tools does it work with?

The Chrome extension masks as you paste in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek and Mistral. For anything else, the web app gives you a masked copy you can paste anywhere.

How do I restore the answer?

Press Alt+Shift+S (or click the Hushtag icon) and paste the AI's reply into the panel. Or select the reply, right-click and choose Restore with Hushtag.

Does it work with Excel and spreadsheets?

Yes. Paste rows straight from Excel or Google Sheets. Hushtag reads the column headers, such as Client, SIN or Account, and masks every cell under them.

Does it work in Microsoft Edge?

Edge can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, so the same extension should work there. Our live tests so far have been in Chrome.

What if I close the page before I restore the answer?

Save a locked key first. Paste it back in later with your passphrase and Hushtag restores the answer, even without the original file.

Does it work with French documents?

Yes. It catches French ID and health numbers, French street addresses and accented names like Hélène or François. The app's buttons and menus are in English for now.

Does this make me compliant with HIPAA, PIPEDA or GDPR?

It helps you send less personal information, which is what those rules ask for, but no tool makes you compliant on its own. Check your firm's policies and your regulator's guidance.
